A Letter From Matt

Dear Partners, Supporters, and Friends,

DMARC has always been about more than any one person – it’s the incredible community of partners, volunteers, individuals, faith communities, businesses, and foundations who make our mission possible. This is something I’ve been reminded of daily through this incredibly impactful work.

When I joined DMARC nearly 6 years ago, I was excited about exploring new possibilities and evolving with the times. Little did I know that “evolving” would mean facing a global pandemic! I’m incredibly proud of how our organization adapted – maintaining our food assistance programs while meeting social distancing guidelines (and successfully moving our Interfaith Youth Leadership Camp online). Even more remarkably, together we completed a $6 million capital campaign, facility remodel, and move during these challenging times. All in the nick of time too… as we’ve seen more and more people seeking out help than we’ve ever seen in the nearly 50-year history of our network.

This work is only possible through countless strong community partnerships with people like you. I could not be more grateful for the impact we’ve had by always putting people first.

When I accepted this position, I shared my philosophy with the board that regular leadership changes are vital for organizational growth. Fresh perspectives and new approaches are crucial for nonprofits to meet our communities’ evolving needs. Following this belief, I informed the Board of Directors that I will be stepping down from my position at the end of this fiscal year (June 30).

Too often, particularly in our nation’s nonprofit sector, the great opportunity for new vision and new leadership does not get realized.  New leadership is not a bad thing, but can be a catalyst for growth, change, and evolution.  Getting new eyes, new ideas, and a fresh approach to the work done by nonprofits is critical to meeting the needs of our ever-evolving communities and their changing needs.  I always promised to leave DMARC poised to realize that kind of opportunity. Now is the right time.

Leading this organization has been one of my greatest honors, but as I may have told you before, it’s never been about me. Working alongside each of you to care for our community has been truly inspiring. I look forward to watching how DMARC continues to evolve and how you all continue to champion our cause. Thank you for everything you do – I will deeply miss being your partner in this work!

With the utmost sincerity,

Matt Unger

Ps. In the months to come I will be assisting with the transition. Please don’t be a stranger! My job isn’t finished here. Let’s keep working towards a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive – all of our neighbors.
